Default 2021 Tailgate/boot not opening on key

Hi there.

The tailgate/boot on my 2021 discovery does not open fully using the remote fob. It opens fine using the external button on the boot, as well as the internal button under the steering wheel.

This video explains it best, but it only opens a small amount, then beeps 3 times.

Can anyone help? A friend mentioned that his VW doesn't open the boot fully from his remote fob if he is too far away from the car. Could this be related, even though my fault still persists if I rest the key on the boot?

Many thanks.

Try removing the negative battery cable and reconnecting

Hi RyanLR3

I recently changed the main 12v battery, and the problem didn't go away. Car was without a battery for about half an hour. Thanks for the input though!

Above thread. My Liftgate wouldn't lift at all. It would unlock, but not lift. Disconnecting and reconnecting the deployable tailgate controller fixed the liftgate. I'm certain the Liftgate depends on a status from the deployable tailgate to operate. Might try doing the same as me... However I'm relatively certain removing the connectors essentially cycled the battery giving it the reset it needed. Maybe it was weak contact on one of the pins ... Who knows.

This is great, thank you!
I shall try disconnecting and checking the connectors tonight.
I have the G4 IID GAP tool, so I'll plug it in and see if I have communication with the two boot modules also.

Update:

All fixed!
I stripped down the boot to look for the modules, and noticed the electric ram that operates the internal boot flap was broken! The ball socket connection on the ram was snapped and the ram itself was seized in the open position.
After a quick look on ebay for replacements, I managed to find one local and collected it this morning rather than waiting for delivery.
Plugged the new ram in and now the boot opens perfectly fine on the remote!
Just found this thread on another site which confirms everything above: https://disco5.co.uk/forum/post11083.html

Hope this helps someone in years to come. Thank you!

That makes sense. The lower tailgate flap only lowers when the fob is used. I'm sure if you open the tailgate with the exterior/interior button and then pushed the button to drop the flap the truck would probably complain as well.

I wonder if this is the result of overloading the cargo area and obstructing the flap as it retracts.

Hi Chucktastic.

Yeah I was thinking of how it could of broken the ball socket. I did think maybe the ram seized once it reached the open position, then the previous owner just forced it shut and snapped the ball socket? Or as you mentioned, overloaded it then tried to shut it.

The vehicle is actually a Discovery Commercial model. For those who don't know or overseas from the UK, this is a standard Discovery 5, but with the rear seats removed. Companies can then treat these has a van/commercial vehicle and claim the VAT back. As the driver who uses it for personal use, my personal tax is then also limited to that of a van/commercial vehicle. When I removed the rear load space floor, there was evidence of spilled paint, brick rubble and what looked like cement, so the rear was definitely abused. Luckily the cabin is lovely still!

I only brought the car 2 months ago and this fault (out of many!) was ****ling me, so really happy it's now fixed.

I had the 12v battery completely fail on me a few weeks ago while driving. I was driving to my office and an "electrical fault detected, stop safely now" error appeared. Car seemed fine, but lost HVAC completely. Managed to get it back close to home and the whole car just died and got stuck in gear on the side of the road. I was convinced it was the alternator as the car still ran fine until the voltage got to around 10v (I have a GPS tracker fitted that also measures the battery voltage), but turns out it was just the battery. Still can't get my head around it as I would of thought the alternator would of kept the car running despite the battery no longer holding a charge, but I suppose cars are different now to what I was brought up with!

Once the battery was replaced, I had an SOS function limited warning on the dash. I had to change the small 3.7v battery on the telemetrics module. I did not have to reset the battery status on this. Simply plugged a new battery in and the warning went away.

Just got to get the windscreen rebonded now. Leaks from the centre mirror point!

Vehicle does have a 03rd party warranty, so I'm hoping I can get some of the cost back. Especially the 12v battery issue!

Anyway thanks for all your help. I'm sure I'll be reporting new issues soon!
