Hi All, looking for some advice:

I recently traded in my 2018 Discovery HSE for a 2023 Discovery R-Dynamic and am not sure what the right move is regarding wheels.

My 2018 came with 22" wheels which were unsuitable for the off-highway travel I like to do, so I replaced them with a set of 18" Tuffant Kimberleys. These were great on the abrasive rock backroads around here, but they do not fit on my 2023 R-Dynamic due to the increase in brake size, so I left them on the 2018 when I traded it in.

So, I'm left with my original set of 22" wheels from my 2018, and a set of 21" wheels that came with the 2023. I've considered:

1. Keep both wheels. Mount studded winter rubber on the 22" and find a good all-terrain tire for the 21" wheels.
2. Sell the 22"s, keep the 21" for studded winter rubber, buy 20" wheels for all-terrain tires.

20" wheels are the smallest to clear these larger brakes.

Thoughts on if I'm going to notice a big difference in 20" wheels vs 21" wheels for back road performance? I live in the Rocky Mountains with side-wall slicing rocky roads. Anyone happy with an all terrain tire on 21"s?

My 2020 D5 came with a 21” wheel. Actually didn’t mind the design but virtually no decent tire options for a 21” wheel. I picked up a set of 20” Defender takeoffs. A 20” wheel offers pretty much unlimited tire options while a 21” wheel offers none

 

agreed! 20” more options.

I’m digging the new OCTA style wheels. Forza mocked up a set with bronze face on my ride.

 

Pulled the trigger on some 20" Defender wheels, I think they look great! Need to figure out what AT style rubber to put on them. Going to sell the 22" wheels and use the 21" ones for winters.

255/60r20 is the factory Defender tire size. I think it looks great on the D5. Very limited options in that size though the KO3 is now available.

275/55r20 is a bit wider but same diameter. You can also get basically tire every option under the sun.

 

275/55R20 is an OEM size for Land Rover. That is the OEM recommended winter tire size for Defenders on 20" wheels.

 

Just curious has anyone gone from a standard 255/60/r20 to a 275/55/r20 All Terrain tire? Curious what the noise/ride difference is?

 

For fuel economy and drivability, it all depends on the load rating and tire weight. They’ll be virtually the same diameter. XL to XL load rating I wouldn’t imagine a big difference. If you go with a true LT load range tire (D/E rated) it will be heavier - usually 8-10 lbs - than the factory XL load rated tires.

For noise, depends on the tread. Plenty of reviews out there that talk about noise and ride for all the popular all terrains

 

Running 275/55R20 Michelin LTX AT2. Zero road noise. It’s our favorite all terrain based on 95% of our driving is on road.

 

May not be everyone's taste, but for those not looking for an A/T tire or the off-road look, I ended up going with a wider tire - 285 50 20. I went with the Toyo Proxies ST iii. Fills the gaps really nice, and gives it a much more aggressive look, especially with the tread design.
