Default Falken AT3w vs Toyo AT3 in 275 55 20

Hey guys I just bought some 20 inch RRS wheels for my 2017 Discovery. It came with 21". I have been reading through all the tire posts. Lot's of information on the K02's. Was going to go that way but see they are quite a bit heavier than the other options. I am in Utah and will be using them mostly on road with snow in winters. I will do some light trails but not heavy duty off roading. I like the look of the Falken and they are cheaper right now since the AT4 is now out. I read they are hard to balance in other forums so wanted to get your opinions from owners who have bought them. Any fit issues going with the wider size on stock height? I believe I read the Falken AT4 doesn't fit but the AT3w should be fine. I have not seen much on the Toyo's on here. If I should be looking at other brands please let me know. Thanks for the help.

I am planning to go with AT3W ATs.
I have them on several trucks. I have been very happy the Falkens.
I did a deep dive into researching the AT3W vs the new AT4W.
I am pretty sure I want to stick with the AT3W AT if I can find a set.
Compound is slightly different hince the higher milage warranty on the AT4W.
But wet and snow traction would however be slightly better with the AT3W compared to the AT4W.

I have had Toyo open countries in the past and was happy with the look, but hated the performance in the rain.
The Falken At3W have been very good in the rain, and snow.

Here are some good video resources that might help.

After all the research, I am personally wishing they kept the AT3W and just added the AT4W.
I am still going to likely stick with the Falken tires even if I can't find a set of AT3Ws.

Given the size your talking about.
I should put a potential warning out there.
I ordered a set of At3W ATs from Priority tire. EBAY they are also on Amazon and have their own website.
The info they provided in their adds indicated they had a SL 113 Load range P275/55R20 but after further research I am pretty sure I will be returning them when they arrive.
The Falken model number for that tire comes back to an AT3W A not AT3W AT.
Totally different tire to what they described and pictured in all their listings on all the sites I mentioned.
It's not a Falken issue just the seller who has there listing info messed up.

This is what an AT3W A looks like.

This was the add that I ordered them off of.
Clearly showing the AT3W AT not the A

The part number I posted a pic of above for the AT3W A is the part number attached to the priority tire listings.
So, I am 90% sure what is arriving tomorrow is going to be the A not the AT I thought I had ordered. So, I plan to return them and try and hunt down a set of the AT3W ATs which according to Falken only ever came in the XL 117 load range or the LT in a load ranger D.

Thanks so much for your reply and the information. Very helpful to know about the A vs AT. I think I saw somewhere that the new Falken AT4 rubs so may not work. I have the Toyo AT 2 on my truck and you are right that they are not good in wet weather. I think the new Toyos should be much better in that regard.

I ran the Toyo Open Country's on my LR4 and was very satisfied with how they handled lake effect Indiana snow, as well as rain. I never had any issues with traction, inflation or performance and almost purchased them for my D5 when I moved into this vehicle.

When I purchased my D5 I had upgraded to the 275/55/20 Load Range D Falken Wildpeak AT3's. I have a slight lift on my truck, but they would fit with stock height.

I researched extensively, but found great information on TireRack.com. They perform a TON of tests with each tire and post the results of various tests that perform on the site. The feedback from consumers is also super helpful.

I've had them on my truck since October 2023 and have put about 9,000 miles on them since then. I have had 0 issues with rubbing and the road noise is hardly noticeable. My MPG's have not been significantly effected ('17 TD6 HSE), I can still average 25-26mpg's on the highway. I have not rotated my tires in that timeframe and everything is wearing beautifully, the alignment has stayed true, and I have not noticed any significant wear and tear on control arms/other components. The tires still look new.

I would 10/10 recommend the Falken Wildpeaks. I have had K02's, Cooper Rugged Treks, Toyo Open Country's, and the Wildpeaks, and so far the Wildpeaks would be the go to. The tire I would not recommend are the BFG K02's... The traction with the set I had was horrible and mine fell victim to dry rot very quickly. The Rugged Treks are awesome, but are extremely loud and I don't believe they would even fit this platform without some lift involved. The Rugged Treks are VERY good in the rain and snow. Another tire to look at are the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/T. The overall ratings in snow, rain, etc. were very high, but I think their price point is a little steeper than the AT3's (at least when I was shopping in 2023).

Make sure your tires are XL or heavier load. SL are too flimsy for the weight of this vehicle, especially if you're going to be airing down, driving over any obstacles or towing. From what I've read, D load range was a good compromise as E was a bit overkill, at least for my driving needs.

Good luck! It's a sickness, but tire shopping is fun.

Thank you for the help. I will take a look at the Mickey Thompson's but leaning towards the Falken. Great to hear you like them and no issues with the fit.

I had tried most of those tires as well, the Falken is my favorite as well.
‘The mickeys were not terrible but they were noticeably louder then the Falken AT3W ATs.
From all the tires I have tested the Falken and Coopers were the two quietest.
Which I found that sound levels to be even more important on unibody vehicles.
‘Most of my tire testing was with body on frame trucks.
However I have owned several unibody vehicles over the years and road noise and such are always more noticeable or pronounced in unibody constructed vehicles.
I would keep low sound levels pretty high on my priority list especially on a unibody vehicle.

Definitely go with the Falkens. I've been running AT3Ws for the past year and 10k miles on my Defender and they are reasonably quiet on-road, excellent in the wet, and fantastic off-road. They also performed exceptionally well in the snow. I'm running LT265/60R20s on 20" Style 516 wheels from an LR4 XXV Edition. KO2s are notoriously bad on wet pavement. I never ran any A/Ts on my old Disco 5 when I had it, as I never really took it off-road. I used my old LR4 and my Defender for that.

I as made mention the other day my first order showed up today and sure enough as I was supespecting it would be they were AT3W A not AT so I just placed a new order for these.
FalkenWildpeak A/T3WP 275 /55 R20 117T XL RBL

Also maybe worth a note, I just found out Discount tire the national chain of tire stores, now owns Tire Rack.
They are actually sourcing these older AT3W ATs I wanted from there Tire rack division.
