AT&T Dropping 3G for 2017 First Edition Discovery
What I find perplexing is that there has been zero communication from JLR on this. Have they even planned for it? I would think that when features start throwing errors in cars in March there will be an influx of customers headed to dealers. Does JLR really expect for this to fly under customers’ radar?
I believe JLR outsources the telematics module, forget the name of the company, unsure about the actual service. The crickets you hear is probably due to litigation potential. AT&T did no one any favours here. There's 80M devices most industrial / commercial, almost all 3rd party affected. No way these get done before demise, some of those don't see civilization in their life cycle at all. The satellite guys must be loving this.

We can blame AT&T for all we want, but it is not their fault here. It was announced 3 years ago ( 4 years now) that 3G will be shut.
Every one knew.
"Except" JLR.
LR is not the only manufacturer impacted by this: https://www.porsche.com/usa/faq-3g-sunset/
Btw, this would also explain some of the “it connects directly to the servers” comments, which is probably a mistaken interpretation of the language in this bulletin. The bulletin indicates the switch from 3G to 2G will happen “on the server”, requiring no intervention from customers or service centers. So in principle this would be seamless as it relates to the functions not tied to the removable SIM (that one will just stop working and one will have to pair the car with one’s hotspot or any other wifi source to keep the related functions).

You will be able to use WiFi for updates and listen to internet radio...and maybe traffic updates - and that's about it.
What you may be losing:
- remote start
- vehicle tracking
- lock / unlock
- temperature setting (remote)
- no WiFi hotspot
- remote diagnostic
The GSM network will operate also for a few months only ( TMO ), and then they will shut it as well.

Trying that this weekend.
So this is what VAG is doing so those very nice 2017 RS7s and R8s can have telematics on par with most Nissan Sentras (not picking on them, just for juxtaposition).

I would speculate commercial and or litigation is preventing a similar JLR announcement.
