Default New guy thinking of buying a D1

So I haven't bought one yet, but I need something for the winter (well, what passes for winter in Kentucky). Currently I am used to PITA British cars as I own a Jaguar STR. Am I opening myself to that many more headaches with a Land Rover?

Our tech area has a list of things to look for in a used D1. And I'll add overheating, codes stored, check engine light burned out, etc. Take your scanner with you to search for stored codes, and see real engine temp, gauge is not real accurate. The high miles vehicles may also have endured a chain of owners, each of whom does less maintenance than previous owner. May have a lot of catch up. I bought one for $1750, and put money and time into it. Higher price does not always equate to better condition. I was lucky to not get a sunroof.

Shop manual set is called the RAVE, a free download below. Pretty simple to work on, which is good as I am a simpleton.

In the opinion of one dwebber, the 98-99 D1 is arguably the most reliable rover ever made.

We have winter in Ky? I thought it just got cloudy and cold and just stayed gray all the time . :-)
I agree with Pinkytoe 99 is the best. The body on my 99 has held up very well. Also had a bunch of work done and did a bunch myself. I have had it since nearly new 26k miles when I bought it 223000 now. Loved it and hated it. But it's great to drive

Hey it snows more here than my home state of Florida! The first year I moved here (2010) it snowed really heavy. My RWD 400hp car with summer tires didn't fair too well! I had a Subie outback, but I sold it off in warmer weather (ya bad idea).
