Ticking can be many things.
Lifter(s ), rocker shafts, rocker arm, valve, oil pump, or a slipped cylinder sleeve. Cam, rod, or crank bearings tend to knock, not tick.
If the truck doesn't overheat, odds are it isn't a slipped sleeve.
The crank seal, front or rear will do nothing for any noise.
The oil pump is directly behind the timing cover. Apparently those are common to break in the 4.0/4.6
I just found the outer oil pump gear in my 04, 4.6 broken yesterday. It would not tick until it warmed up.
An oil pump is $75. Lifters are $95.
Neither are hard to replace, and if the truck runs good other than the tick, one of the 2 is likely the problem (although, as said, there are other causes).
If you can't do the work, they're gonna getcha on labor.
And, if the mechanic is telling you a seal is the problem...find another mechanic.
