Do you know the "waving" rule?
I've tried a few methods with the Landies and Rangies. I now do a full wave with the right hand after one flash of the lights. Most drivers don't flash the lights but I find that it gets their attention better!
I have come to the conclusion that it's 50/50 success rate and that depends entirely on where abouts you live. In more upper class, snooty or heavy urban areas people tend not to wave back for either of three reasons:
1) they're too busy fkking around with their phones and not paying attention
2) they think they are better than everyone else, or
3) they simply are oblivious to the wave culture.
However, there are exceptions.
People who live in a slightly more friendly town, rural areas or places where people actually have some common decency, you are highly likely to get a wave back.
A wave is a sign that the other driver is an enthusiast. No wave back is a sign that they are clueless. I don't get angry when they fail to wave. I just peg them as clueless.
So, I find that our waving culture is a little different, it's not just waving for no apparent reason - it is a way to identify others (and get recognized in return).Yes, it's fun.
These days, I basically wave at every Landy/Rangie I pass by.
Just don't get upset if you only have a 50% success rate. Like I say: it's a way to identify. If they don't wave back then it simply means theyare not part of the "enthusiast club". That's all. They probably bought their car so they could pose in it.

If I see you, I'll wave crazily! Lol.
Welcome to the club!

I've started dailying my 'Stang to save on gas and the Rover has been bumped to the "toy" position. I wave at most Mustangs too and have never really gotten much response. I wave from the wheel in the 'Stang. I'll go out the window in the Rover if the window is already down, otherwise it gets from the wheel also.
I'll go against the grain here. I personally don't enjoy the whole wave thing. I had a couple Jeeps and I found it annoying. Of course I'm wierd and I recognize it. Occasionally I have seen a modded Rover and he may get a nod or maybe a lifted figure off the steering wheel. But to go around waving like a lunatic to anyone who happens to own the same vehicle as you seems wierd to me. Maybe because it takes more than vehicle ownership to get me out of my shell. I've met plenty of a-holes of every brand loyalty. I guess what would impress me more would be someone giving a nod of respect from any make of 4x4. Acknowledgement of the off road community in general. Can you imagine? An Fj pulling up next to a Rover. Both giving the others truck the once over. Noting obvious mods, clumps of mud, battle scars. Both nodding in respect and approval. Now that's cool.

Now that is cool. I want one.
I am going to get one too. Jumping on that bandwagon!!!

I'm sorry but every time I read the title to this thread all I can think of is
'Do you know the muffin man?'..
Judging on whether I think the other person will wave back, I wave.. yeah, kinda shallow of me but some people are ***** and don't wave back...and I wouldn't want to look stupid
I had a guy in a mini cooper wave at me last week. I waved back.
A lot of high school kids are starting to buy these up in my area. I don't wave because, well.. I wouldn't want to be a cougar.. tssss - but seriously, it really depends on the situation. Range Rovers not really.. they think they're better than Land Rovers - you know that they do. Really.. they really, really do....and I don't have time for that.
Funny story.. about minivans waving at Rovers.. I was sitting in a dark parking lot last year, with my hair 'doinked' up on top of my head.. way up there, embellished with a Buff.... you know.. those things that they wear on Survivor? Anyway.. this guy in a minivan pulled up alongside the Rover, and started waving at me crazily like he knew me. I had never seen him before in my life, haha. Maybe in his mind he thought he was driving a Rover and he left it at home in the garage?... don't know - but MrValingo's post made me think of that

Cougars wave at high school kids? LOL, that's just being overly self-conscious now... you can wave at whoever you want

Have you seen the muffin man, by the way?
It is a shame that most Range drivers think they have a better pot to pi$$ in. The Queen owns and drives several Land Rovers and Range Rovers and she waves at most people that recognise her! Even on quiet drives when not "in appearance". Apparently she waved and smiled at one of my buddies (off duty soldier) when driving down the Balmoral castle driveway the other day.
Range Rover models are made by the same company that makes Land Rover models. It's the same freakin' brand of car!!! So why do people think they are better? I just don't get it. Whats that... you had an extra $20k to spend on your car, so you are better than me? Lol. (You just put an extra 20k into a something called "a depreciating asset" and are now driving around with your nose in the air. Ha ha, what losers people are.
I wave at them all. I don't care. My ego takes no hits for other people's snobbery. Down to earth Brit, and staying that way!
I enjoyed reading your post
Wow, had no idea there was a culture or even a rule. When I had a Pinzgauer there was a lot of waving to other pinzies as there were only about five of them in the whole state. Same with the Mog I had.
Now I have an LR there seems to be a bit of a non issue with sort blending into the crowd.
I did wave to one the other day and he waved back, what a shock.
Now that I know, I'll begin...especially to others that seem to have some sort of off road vibe going. The off road group I am in has 5 LR owners and we do feel special, at least there.
