Apart from Smart car owners the waving fashion has virtually disappeared.
Not at all mate. People wave all the time! Both in UK and US. You just have to try it more. The thing is, most people get discouraged after trying 3 or 4 times and not getting any waves back - then they give up completely and write off the whole idea completely. This is the wrong mindset.

There are so many people who wave at me. It is partly to do with the area (nice vs snooty) and partly to do with the driver (enthusiast vs clueless). Granted, you get quite a few clueless types who never wave back. I write them off as morons.

But anyone who is anyone will always return a wave. I was waved at three times on the way to work today. That's in one day!!!

The key is to just do it and not get butthurt if the other person doesn't return the wave. Just keep doing it! Happy-go-lucky personality vs being a grump

Still true when driving my mum's MGB, but then again the odds of seeing another are pretty low.

I can't really comment about the UK in recent years but back some years ago in the south east no-one waved, they were too busy with life.

Here in France if you waved the chances are you MAY get a wave back by chance or accident of recognition or a one or two fingered salute is more than likely

That's because Rovers will always get you where you're going, just not necessarily back again!

Never really understood the whole wave craze, seems (insert homophobic statement)

I also ride a bike (Yamaha FZ6r) and drive a Jeep... If I do wave, it's followed by me saying "Dumb-***".

I've had my Disco 2 for a few weeks now and just today had my first chance to wave at a fellow D2, same color and everything. Got a cheerful wave in return. I've always waved to people driving the same car I am. I had a Nissan 300ZX (Z32, newer body type) and now drive a 350Z. I think Z cars and Rovers both have a kind of 'legacy' status, among other cars with large enthusiast followings. People driving those types of cars usually notice fellow owners and are happy to wave!

In the UK bikers always nod to each other FKW, but they do. In France if you move over they salute you by extending outwards their right leg (dangerous IMO)

I tend to mumble something when they nod in the UK or salute me here as it always seems so futile.

As far as waving to others from a car or truck, never, to me it is futile IMO.
