Default Removing Stuck Fuel Injector

I wanted to pass on a trick I used to remove an absolutely frozen/stuck fuel injector while replacing valve cover gaskets on a 2011 Range Rover Sport with a 5.0 V8 (normally aspirated). I got 7 out of 8 injectors out with little trouble, but the number 6 injector was frozen. I had soaked it in PB blaster and many other penetrants for weeks and it did not budge. I ended up breaking it where the small tube meets the larger end of the injector. I was able to fit a 10mm nut extractor (female version of an extractor) on the piece remaining and rotate the injector. Once I did that, the pb blaster was able to soak in better and the injector came out!!

The advantage of this is that there is no need to drill a hole to accept a male extractor.

If the injector will not turn/twist, it will not come out. So in the future, I would try to turn a stuck injector. If it doesn't twist, then break off the injector and use this extractor tool to twist it. Once you get it to turn it WILL come out!!!

This is what was stuck in the head

This is the 10mm extractor I used

This shows the extractor on the remains of the fuel injector

@dwbursch I have the same issue, how did you get the extractor on the injector and what did you use to pull it out?

You need to break off the injector where the small tube connects to the larger part of the injector. Once I got the extractor on, I was able to turn the injector counterclockwise; the teeth on the extractor are designed this way. This allowed the penetrant (pb blaster) to soak in more and it came out the next day.

dwbursch,

I'm sure this is too late, but wanted to share this because I was so excited to find it. I needed to pull some fuel injectors out of both my L322 and L405 recently. I had previously taken out some L322 injectors and damaged or broke almost all of them in the process. So this time I decided to see if there was a different tool available and I'm so glad I checked. Take a look at the video or click on the Amazon link. Other than blowing out the fuel injector wells for dirt, you won't need to spray anything to loosen them, you will only need about 3 minutes to pull each injector. And you will never damage, bend or brake another injector. The removal is easy and release of the injectors are smooth and controlled. No more broken injectors or knuckles.
