Well it was worth a shot. Perhaps the salt spray, yes.
I might think it would be fun to get an empty plastic trash bin, put it behind the Defender, and back into it on purpose. See if it indeed slams on the brakes? IDK. Might make for a good photo shoot. PS - By comparison, mine will stab the brakes & stop just shy of the object. I haven't tested various speeds but at normal slow backing speeds it works well.
I'm going to give a test since now I'm even more frustrated this happened! LOL
Seems to me that many body shops are crooked get-rich-quick scammers. One of the examples has only damage to easily and cheaply replaceable corner plastics and the bumper plastic under the rear door. Less than $1000 and plenty of non original better parts available and could be repaired totally as new in a matter of hours. Others with relatively minor rear panel damage behind a rear wheel which could easily be mostly beat out and filled and repainted to perfection, at less than $750 [£500]. I’ve dented my front wing in a similar sort of way and I’m not going through insurance and my local bodyshop has assured me that it will cost no more that £500 to repair to as-new.

I wouldn't say that body shops are out trying to scam you. Unfortunately, any kind of body work is going to be a minimum of $750-$1,000 or more these days. I got rear ended by a woman with no insurance a week and a half ago, and while the damage to my car is nowhere near as bad as that (you can't see any damage from five feet away), I was still quoted a minimum of $1,500 to repair my rear bumper, and $2,900 to replace it. I'm just going to pay for it to avoid having an accident report on my car and going through insurance.
