So what controls the turn signal? I've watched several of the videos on doing this myself. I am just not confident that I can get the headlamp assembly pulled apart and glued back together properly.

Some other electrical doohickey that's not badly designed. Turn signal is completely unaffected by the DRL failure. The two squares still light up initially but will go out as they need some electrical handshake from the halo to stay on. These are otherwise unaffected and will work normally when you swap in the DRL module.

I didn't fancy my chances either so just got a direct replacement from a breakers yard for less than $380 and got the replacement DRL module for $2.38

Now I have a spare headlight.

You can buy failed DRL light assembly on ebay for about $50-$75. The DRL modules themselves are dirt cheap. Even if you do break some of the plastic in th eheadlight surround it doesn't matter. It all gets hidden when the light goes back in place. I did mine just for fun really. I think with practice this could become routine.

Do you think there is any chance the turn signal will start working if I program the DRL's to remain off with the GAAP tool? Doesn't sound like it.

Completely unrelated. The turn signal will be unchanged. You’ve been given bad information. Easy to fact check this. Just turn them off with GAP and you’ll see all is well.

the DRL halo snafu has no impact on indicators. None.

Thought I'd add this: My LH DRL failed last year and was replaced free under the 4-year warranty. And as expected, my RH DRL has just failed, which is 6 months beyond my warranty. My dealer has been excellent and has just emailed that JLR would cover 60% of the replacement (my cost is a little over $1k).

So it's nowhere near as bad as I was expecting. However, it does signify to me that perhaps this DRL failure will end up as a Recall.

Thanks, we are pursuing this option now as well.

UPDATE: My local dealer Princeton NJ did the RH replacement. Free loaner car, absolutely wonderful service, AND, LR reduced the unit price so my bill was only $660 inc tax!

THAT, I think, is pretty damned good.

We wrote to Land Rover and they agreed to contribute 30% to the repair. Somehow it was only charged $1,100 plus tax installed so I am pretty happy though I don't know how they came up with 30% if a new lamp is $3-4k. Either way, I am just happy to not have to buy a used light or pull the old one apart, both have risks obviously.

After getting my left headlamp replaced for around $200, my right headlamp has gone out about 2 months later.

I have minor fender damage on the right side of the vehicle which I assume will mean that JLR won't be as helpful replacing the headlamp this time around.

Can we assume you have no warranty, if so, I'd still talk to JLR because so many of these units are failing 3-4 years in, and I think JLR are almost at the point where they'll issue a recall. Ask at your dealership, or phone them direct.
I don't think the damage needs to be involved in your discussions.
