I f
ind the OEM rack to not use space efficiently but it has held up to a lot of load. I also wish it was longer in the front. I have heard that if you go with the front runner long rack you have to add heat to the front bolts in the roof to be able to remove them. Lucky8 has come up with this method. If I had to do it again I would try the front runner rack because everything I have on the rack is from FR so everything would fit and work better.
I bought the flat recovery board mount from Lucky 8 and really like it - for what it's worth. The slanted one is too tall for my garage, the flat one slips right in.
It's $68 for a bunch of bolts etc but it's custom made and works great.

I only mount a few items up there. A ladder mount and a shovel. I do occasionally mount one of my flat Nanuk or Pelican cases on the rear portion. I keep it relatively free so I can use it for the survey drones as a landing pad and a platform for photography or long range binocular viewing. I make my own. The shovel and ladder mount are made from Starboard and some 8mm bolts and rings. The actual shovel mount is actually a mount for a boat hook I get from West Marine and a Saris bone strap. Works super well, even on my seaplane at 200mph. The ladder stabilizer is from Front Runner and was stupidly cheap on sale. If you grind about a mm or two off the head of an 8mm bolt on a belt sander they work in the tracks. Or you can spend money on long T bolts from Amazon, cut to size. I think I may have almost $25 in both mounts.
I do try to keep the vehicle from looking too much like a Mexican bus enroute to market day in Hemasillo. Although I am finishing up my Overlanding Chicken Cage and Overlanding Pig Crate. Doing it just to taunt my buds back in South Africa.
