I have the Nitto Ridge Grappler 275/55/20 E Load range which is 32.13 inches tall and 11.18 wide on factory 8.5" wheels. The tires fit without rubbing at sock ride height before I put on the 1.0" Proud Rhino Lift.
No lift:
Lifted:
Jesse - I am getting these same tires, they look really good on your defender.
Is that second shot with the 1" lift in off-road height or normal height?
Do you have the 30mm spacers on also in these shots? Do you like the spacers? If yes, where'd you get em, and are they easy to install?
Did you need to remove the rear wheels to install the 1" lift rods?
Sorry for all the questions, but I like the look of your ride too much not to ask about it.
The stock wheel width on the 20" wheels is 8.5". 305 is much, much wider than would be ideal for that wheel width. You'd want 11-12" wheel width for a 305.
If u see my earlier post about measurements, the width of the tire is the biggest deterrent to large wheels. I don't see how a 305 would fit without different wheels that has the correct offset or spacers. This is with the stick 255 width and the top arm.
I did Yokohama Gelolandar 275/65R18 on steel wheels without any issues. I did have to use 30mm spacers due to the Terrafirma wheels. If you have the stock 18' wheels, you should be fine with those tires.
I just put the 275/55/20 BFG KO2’s on my D90 X-Dynamic S P400.
The tires look the business. While these tires look much better than the ones that came with the vehicle, they do not “handle” on road nearly as well. At lower speeds they have a reassuring planted feeling about them. At these speeds they might be better than stock. Where I did notice they were much dartier than stock was when you got up to 70-80mph. At those speeds you could feel the initial hesitation and then a awkward dart as the tire changes lanes. I’m pretty sure this would show up in a slalom at lower speeds. For folks that spend a lot of time on the highway, this might matter, especially if you are sensitive to tire dynamics. (I spent years tracking cars, so I have way more experience on road than off road where I’m a total newb).
For me the trade-off is worth it, but it was interesting to see how that tire change alone made the Defender feel more “truck” than the Discovery.
I’m aware the KO2’s would be much better off road.
I dint really notice any change in the road noise from the tires.
The spare tire is being installed tomorrow (they forgot)

This is probably a stupid question, but is there any downside to running offset spacers? I'm planning on replacing the OEM tires with Nitto Ridge Grapplers (275/55/20). With 30mm spacers, the front wheels poke out just a little too much for my tastes, but the rears are perfect. My ideal setup would be 25mm spacers in the front and 30mm spacers in the rear.
Shouldn’t be a problem. I had a 2004 911 Turbo S that had optional SportTechno wheels and came from the factory with 17mm H&R spacers in the rear and 5mm spacers in front. I wanted a more aggressive wheel-well filling stance so I replaced with 30mm back and used the 17mms in the front and never had any issues for the two years I had it.
