Very interesting.
I live in Denver so at altitude and often go into the mountains. When we test drove a P300 I felt it didn't have any power so went with the P400. Yet when in the mountains trying to get past semi's the P400 still feels like it doesn't have enough power, even when "kicked down".
My only other data point is our XC70, I-6 3.0L turbo only and that thing rockets past. It's an apples to oranges comparison though!

P300 has also different drive gear ratios, IIRC.

I’m also in Colorado, but up in the mountains at 9700ft. My p300 has plenty of power and a constant blast to drive. I have a D90 so your experience may differ, but there is no way I need a v8, which appears is all they are going to offer in the d90 going forward.
