Default Toyo AT3 vs BFG KO2 (any experiences?)

Ok - just took delivery a couple of weeks ago of my new 24' 110 p400, I live down 7 miles of hardback snow road (somewhat maintained) and I'm utterly underwhelmed with the stock Goodyear Adventures (yea, I know they're the M+S "non-kevlar" ones.).

So my question is - given the weight of this vehicle does anyone have any experiences between the Toyo AT3 and the BFG KO2?

* I like the Toyo AT3 because I can get it in an E rated version + I have heard is is slightly better on mixed snow/ice - then again I have heard the BFG KO2's are just built tough (given I'd likely to go 275/55R20 so with 6" of sidewall, strength is important.) plus, to compound this decision - I haul dirt bikes out to the western slopes in summer so sidewall strength matters. (this isn't just a snow and ice question as it is a balancing question).

Ideas - thoughts? Alternative ideas?
I suspect I might be splitting hairs here.... ha ha!

This is a tough one….

the Toyos have much weaker sidewalls.

they also have better snow performance than the KO2s, and my understanding is that they are quieter on road.

if your main use is road and snow, with occasional rocky trails, go with the Toyos and don’t air down too much in the rocks.

if sidewall is mission critical, KO2 all day.

Thanks for that - the decision is not easy then. Any tire sit in-between?

Anyone here running the Mickey Thompson's Baja Boss?
* I know it's a bit more noisy but seems like it might slot right in-between these two insofar as snow/ice and toughness goes.

We've been using the k02's since the summer of 21 (after blowing out one of the Goodyear Adventures) I went ahead and changed the rear calipers so I could downsize to 18" wheels and use LT265/70R18. I'm a huge fan of the K02's and debated 275/55R20, but really wanted just a tad more sidewall. They've been great tires for us.

Never used the KO's, but have gone through a couple of sets of the Toyo AT3's. I have an F350, ex-Forest Service truck I keep in Hermosillo. The Forest Service green color effectively theft proofs the truck, aside from it being laughably cheap at auction. I use it for the inspection and exploration when I am down there in and around the Yaqui River basin. The roads basically suck. The dirt roads and trails are also particularly awful. So the tires on the poor truck suffer every inch they travel. The Toyos only last around 12,000 miles before they get so ragged they are uncomfortable to run on the truck. I continue to use them since they do give decent traction on the, lets call them, roads. They also have the load bearing I need when towing a backhoe or the like. Also, they are one of the few brands I can actually buy down there. Mexico has huge tariffs on tires, something like 400%. They perform fairly well, but do not last too terribly long.

One of the lovely exploration sites I'm setting up on the Yaqui River:

I've had both and currently have the toyos. No snow where I am, but I do a decent amount of gravel and FS roads to get to dirt bike and mountain bike trails.

K02s:
  • better sidewall
  • more noise (gets worse past 20k miles, in my experience). 1 set was on LR4 and the other on defender 110
  • uneven tread wear - center of tread was wearing faster than outside edges

toyo at3s (only have about 15k miles on mine:
  • better on road and maybe slightly better MPG
  • less aggressive looks - if that matters to you
  • Noise seems to be getting a little worse, not noticeable with windows up
  • Haven't done any real off roading with these yet, but I suspect they won't be as good as k02s
