Three of the four pistons were cracked, dead center - cross dome.
Honed cylinders and just waiting for pistons, should be here today. Pretty impressive, four days from UK.
Hopefully, l'll be going the other direction in this hole soon...and it doesn't turn into a 30 days in the hole...lol.. Will say one thing, compared to the diesels l normally work on...Cats, Cummins, Maxforce DT/V8's...this thing is pretty cute and cuddly in comparison.
How do pistons get cracked in that diesel, just curious
Pretty common issue on the 2.5TD, they had supposedly corrected the issue in the later years...but...even though mine is basically the last year of production...but early 1990 and it ended up having cracked pistons...most 1990's have the 200tdi. From what l've read, when they added the turbo to the 2.5TD, and increased the howerpower, it stressed the pistons. Was hoping for the best...however...the best...just never happens with this things.
Pistons arrived today, but l spent the day working on the Dll 04's engine instead. It's been sitting on the engine stand for about six months...so...assembled it today and will drop it in tomorrow. Had to much going on in the garage, with two engines apart and all. Was running out of work space, now bench is free for disassembling the pistons.
Pretty productive day yesterday, for an old man and all.
ihscouts...injectors were getting replaced anyway, new set. But, l noticed it was getting down on power, what little there is...lol. Was hoping this would be a simple head gasket, injector and a few other odds and ends and be back running. But, rover life is never that simple. Turbo spins freely and had decent boost before l disassembled, oily on the front side, naturally, from blow-by, but l've not checked the exhaust side...for a matter of fear maybe...lol.
Pretty productive day...was just going to mount pistons and install...but...
Installed pistons on rods, pistons in the holes, new bearings installed, head on and torqued, intake and exhaust manifold installed.
Hard to believe how heavy that little head is...about wound up in the engine compartment on my head. Next time, oh yes...there will most likely be a next time...it will go under the engine hoist.
Feels good to have some of it back together, hopefully tomorrow l'll get the oil pan on and injectors installed.
Worked on the white Dll also today, started it up and it had a hell of a squeal noise. Pulled and lubed large idler pulley...but that didn't do the trick. Knocked the bearing out, but the parts store was closed in town. Had the old shorter belt from my A/C delete on my 01...so l threw that on so l could still do some test drives until the pulley gets repaired.
The girls...
Maybe tomorrow we'll have three out of three rovers running...that will be a first in many months...lol.
