After 2 years of Chewbacca like sounds from my power steering pump I finally swapped it out and now it sounds and feels great!
Here are some take aways that I found helpful from other forum members and from YouTube videos:
- Watch YouTube vids on how to remove everything to get to the power steering pump.
- Gather up a bunch of rags and a drip pan for fluid leaks.
- Drain/remove as much of the old fluid out of the reservoir and lines as possible.
- Check filter screen inside of reservoir for trapped particles. I had quite a bit but most of the sludge was on the opposite side of the baffle on the bottom. I ended up cleaning the whole reservoir inside and out with faboloso.
- Loosen or remove as much as you can while the steering pump is still attached to the engine.
- If you have to, remove cooling fan first when the serp belt is still on! I forgot this step and had a devil of a time getting the fan clutch nut loose. Doh!
- If your diving this deep into swapping the steering pump, go ahead and change out the hi-pressure hose o-rings also while you are in there.

- Take some vice grips and remove that d@mn center stud for the pump. Mine had stripped threads and was bent. Toss it in the bin.
- When reinstalling the original LR hose clamps, make it easier on yourself and try to seat them on the hose like the were previously. Just look for the indention on the hose and reinstall the clamps that way.
- Take your time, drink some beer and have fun.
Do it properly! Old URI hose and a new Meyle low pressure hose (Left to right) old Chewie, a pump I removed at a scrap yard and one I bought from eBay. Rags and drip pan are essential. I installed the steering pump from eBay. Get rid of it. Stripped threads and all.
The pump was running great but then the steering box crapped out on me and started pissing out fluid. The Land Rover garage mechanic talked me into getting a newer steering pump (in case it caused the steering box to fail) so I had both parts replaced.
