Default 97 disco rebuild help

Hey everyone,
I've been driving my 97 disco somewhat trouble free for the last three years. The other day I was pulling onto the main street by house and I heard a pop come from the drivers side wheel. I then lost power to my wheels/would no longer accelerate. Luckily I could push it into the gas station. The guy told me to scrap it cause he think I need an axle and a transfer case. My thinking is that it could just be a joint. Needless to say it's now parked at my house because I'm not sure what to do or who to take it to since my regular mechanic has recently retired. Ive put some work into it and want to keep it. I'm also interested in rebuilding the engine since it has tons of leaks @130xxx on the clock. I'm in my last semester of college so time and money is an issue, otherwise I would try to do it myself. I'm in ann arbor mi. If anyone can give me some advice/help/cost involved, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.

P.s. It doesn't drive when I try to lock it. When I lock it in high, a High pitch noise goes on, like the one when you start the rover, stays in until I pop it out... Thanks again for any advice you can give me

You have a broken CV joint is my best guess without looking at it.
Jack up the driverside front wheel and spin it by hand, does the front driveshaft move too?

That noise is the warning beep that your t case isnt fully engaged, try rolling forward a few feet and see if it fully locks, that will get rid of the noise. I found that one out a few weeks ago when changing my tires, noise drove me crazy and ended up just being me not getting the shifter all the way into position.

CV joint is the most probable but it really could be anything. A t case usually gives you a warning before it completely craps out, so does a differential. Without it being under extreme stress or having previous noise/problems in that area I would say start with the CV joints.

If money is tight, and you are near a junk yard, the whole half shaft, cv and all will slide right out. I took one out this past summer in like 30 minutes. Think I paid $34.

I found a yard on car-parts that has 2 donor rovers like 6 miles from my house. So I should be tearing through the snow again shortly. I think I'll do some major engine service while I'm at it. Thanks again for everyones help. It's literally insane how mich $$$ you can save yourself when you decide to get your hands a little dirty

Usually what happens when turned loose in the yard with plenty of folding money or plastic left, you'll buy more goodies than you'll have time to install, but they can go on the spares shelf. Like an alternator.... Plus you get to practice on some one else's chassis for a very low tuition. By the time you get home, you've already done most of the work once, so it will go easier.

Check those donors over for things like starter, alternator, ECU, MAF, like Savannah suggeted the axle assemblies. Just ask them about prices before you tear a bunch of things out of the donors.

You may also want things like window and seat switches as well if prices are right.
