If you don't have a code reader most auto parts stores will read for free. In some states they are not allowed to clear codes, and I suspect once the savage corporate attorneys look at it that might become a nationwide standard for various chains. But you might want to be sure about codes, after major engine work. Also, this depends on which year truck you have. What year?

Without knowing what year your truck is we cant help you.
And the battery being unhooked has nothing to do with the check engine light coming on.
You have a problem and the code will help you figure out what it is.

Did you at least read the code while you had it hooked up???

Well, if you need to, stop at autoparts store and they can read it if it returns.

A basic code reader is really a must for any obd2 disco.. I picked up a snazzy one from HF for 100 bucks with a coupon that will read live data and also log a minute of data. You can set it up to log manually or when a DTC is triggered..

I bought an Ultra Guage and it will read codes and display up to 16 guages depending on which ones you pick i got it for the temp guage but you can also turn the check engine light off the best part only 80 bucks i would recomend doing a serch and checking them out

If you know it's nothing it will extinguish on it's own in a few drive cycles without having to reset.......
