you must be strong we had to use a 2-3' breaker bar with 3' pipe on the 3rd pass on the bolts

New bolts, holes cleaned out but not chased with a tap, light copper color grease that came with them, lightly grease block around bolt hole, looked down every bolt hole with flashlight to be sure no coolant or oil in the bottom. 6'3" 275. First pass 15 ft pounds, second pass 90 degrees, thrid pass 90 degrees. Didn't need Advil afterwards, but it is a good push or pull.

The valve covers have been soaking for several days in a tub of degreaser out in the sun (95F +). It did not get it all, had to do a lot of scrubbing. once you start down this dark path, you have to do something or the dislodged gunk could come out and go where you don't want it. Build up was 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep in spots. Last job had black RTV'd th VC gaskets down.

Rods went into Berrymans parts cleaner, after about 30 minute soak most of the sludge is off or comes off easily. Before you pour it into the oil be aware that Berrymans will eat rubber seals, like rear main.

I used gas to clean the metal parts, it works just as good and is much cheaper than other cleaners. $3.39 for a gallon.

It looks purty. She's gonna run so good afterwards. You're almost there Buzz. Are you swapping out the water pump? Is it new/newer? Now's the time...

Did WP a while back. Found out you don't get new exhaust bolt locking tabs in the HG kit, although you do get new exhaust gaskets.

Couldn't you have taken the valve covers in with the heads for some time in the hot tank? They should have been able to do something with the rocker shafts too.

I didn't ask about the hot tank and VCs. Did have to take the baffles out to get at the hidden gunk. I don't think the tank would have cleaned up the small passages in the rockers, but I did soak them in diesel for a few days and in Berrymans parts cleaner, then worked by hand.

I got the rockers on today, and the exhaust gaskets and manifolds are back, need one locking tab metal gizmo, the rest were returned to service after hammering on the brick. Thunderstorms cut me short, hope to get intakes and throttle body on tomorrow. Brushed out solid gunk inside intakes, coating the path from upper plenum to head. Did not soak the lower intake, did soak the upper and it cleaned up.

Looking at all this gunk has made me think that if you buy a Rover that has been to the Colonel (extra crispy) getting all that gunk out won't happen with solvents or oil changes. And there is a good possibility that the "gunk" was moonlighting as a gasket, so oil leaks may increase (if that's possible with a Rover) and oil pressure decrease.

Session 16

Clean up intake manifold, bolts, lip seals. Cleaned all surfaces. Applied sealant per RAVE just on the lip seals, notches, and the rubber gaskets for them. Installed valley pan. Tightened lip seal bolts. Nothing lines up right, the word "front" is stamped in the valley gasket an at the water pump end. What next?

it lines up once everything is bolted and the center is pulled down, when I did mine I believe it said coat with adhesive so I used thin coat of ultra black on both sides around the ports, I am used to normal gaskets for intakes not the tin one used here so was unsure exactly which way to go with it
