Default high idle and the IACV

Hi all - Just changed the master cylinder and bled the brakes on my D1. Its such a nice day that i thought id work on my high idle issue as well. I've read many a post concerning this subject and think i have a pretty good understanding. Its either a doner IACV and ECU or a trip to a indy for a hour shop time for the testbook reset. What about if you unplug the IACV in park and the idle never changes or stumbles. Does that point to a bad iadle valve? I dont mind a trip to a garage but would hate to find out then that the IACV is no good. Just curious how I can be sure its working before i call it bad. Thanks,

Keith

You should be able to have the IACV out, plugged in, and turn key on and should be able to see it move.

thanks Savannah. So if its out and it doesnt budge with the key on, the idle doesnt change plugged in or not plugged in its a safe bet the IACV is dead? If so and I change it with a new one is it possible the ECU will recognize the new one and bring the idle down to a normal level?

fwiw.... I replaced mine with a crossover part from NAPA.....was a gm application...with the initial start up the idle was high (1800 or so )....the instructions with the new part said to drive the vehicle for a few miles at 40 mph and it should correctly set it self....well...when I came to a stop after the drive the idle had slowed to maybe 1200....still high...I shut the engine off and sat there a few seconds, restarted the engine and miracle of miracles...idle was correct. I'm sure that anyone with all the correct diagnostics could set the idle at once.....but a lot of techs have told me since that the drive it / shut it off / keep trying it method usually works.

about the right price, but mine never would re-learn. Tried all the burn a chicken and dance bacwards methods on the internet. Ended up swapping IACV and ECU from same donor vehicle. Too damn cheap to go to the dealer.
