My 97 wont start .
Ages ago my rev counter has been all over the place then had the usual starting probs , had it checked and alternater was fine so a new battery fixed it but never the rev counter as it has always been playing up . 3 months later now it wont start but cranks over - need help .
Need more info please...have you checked the fuel pressure...any alarm issues...what have you fixed within the last year...miles...fuel filter etc. So your tach is out of whack, ask Danny Lee, that's usually an alt prob but shouldn't lead to a non-start issue. This sounds like a fuel delivery issue to me.

gununner,
with all our Jedi powers, we just can't quite make out the shape of the pile of abused metal you call an engine.... you'll get a lot more help, and sometimes spot on, if you tell us what you are working with. '97 Yugo? '97 Corvair? '97 Mite-neva-krank?
Meanwhile, use your computer skills and download the factory shop manuals, called the RAVE, at the link below.
A sample page is attached, for the tachometer, which is same wiring for the most part diesel or gas. The alternator has wires on the back that attach by bolts, and a small one that has a push on clip. That's the one that takes the signal to the tach. If connector is dirty, or if wire is pinched, skinned up, grounded, gnawed by rats, anywhere between tach and alternator, that could be a problem. Or could just be bad tach. Usually when alternator fails, tach goes to zero. But if you have on again / off again brushes in the alternator, might do as you have observed. If you can read volts on battery when tach is dead or erratic, and volts are between 13.8 and 14.4, it is not the alternator.
