I have seen a special wrench for the VC on RN for pretty cheap.

Or, just pull the coil wire.

If that doesnt work pull the pan and do the 2x4 method. You pan probably needs to be resealed anyways

the bump starter method scares me
That was the original plan until I saw the front radiator support was directly in the way.

I don't mind the starter method, like banzai said, pull the coil wire.

It helps if you turn it the right way. Either way the Rave should specify there are some with the normal thread. Viscous on audi's are left hand thread, so it made sense to me.

Back at it early. Has there ever been a step by step write up on this procedure?
I find myself all over the place in the rave between repair and overhaul. Really hard to pick which step to do next.

haha no.... what steps are you choosing from? Remove everything attached to cam, remove cam, put in new cam attach everything to cam set/check timing good to go.

Well. There is oil pan, radiator, loosen crank bolt (I assume first), front cover etc etc.

Are you replacing the timing? I did mine in 2010 and it gave me fits. I sourced two of the Large Timing sprockets from two different vendors. Both AllMakes and both of them the woodruff key wasn't cast properly. It was too small and wouldn't fit on the end of the cam.
So test fit the new sprocket on the old cam to verify the woodruff key is OK.

AllMakes sucks, BTW.

Yea man just start taking it apart with you goal of getting the cam out. You have to take the crank pulley off to get the front cover off which is going to likely take bump start or removing oil pan. Then you're going to have to take the top end apart enough to remove tappets then replace cam and reassemble.

D&D sent you timing chain and sprocket with that kit right?

Yes. Have the D&D kit. Came with cam, timing gears, chain, tappets, lube for cam and break in oil additive from crane cams. It is a crower cam and tappets.
