Default speedo and rpm guages are down

Hi Forum,

Something screwy has happened with my D1. The speedometer has stopped working and the rpm gauge has stopped as well. I need to check to see if the odometer has stopped - I'll do that later. The fuel gauge seems to be working correctly.

Before I noticed all this I noticed a problem with the key/ignition. I would turn the key and only hear the faint sounds of relays or something and it would not start - just dead. Then I would turn the key again and it would fire up no problem. I checked my battery connections and they seem to be good. This seems to be an intermittent kind of thing. Today it started up with the first turn of the key.

I pulled the code: P0460 which is fuel level sensor or something like that...

I drove with my OBDII scanner in dynamic mode. It show rpms but for speed it showed nothing - or 0 mph.

It has rained here in the SF Bay Area and I haven't been driving much so I'm not sure when this all occured. But things definitely got wet...

If any of you guys have any suggestions I would really appreciate it.

Check your grounding strap to the frame. Sometimes they get rust and corrosion between the frame/strap and cause intermittent starting issues. Sand the frame and use some dielectric grease. Worse case, it doesn't work but it is a cheap fix you can eliminate it as a problem.

I did the grounding fix/maintenance procedure you mentioned about a year ago so I don't think that could be it.

Did you check the connections at the alternator?

Hi Guys,

I just checked the connections at the alternator. They seem good.

Also, I have no temperature gauge movement, along with the rpm and speed.

When I turn the key I hear a relay-like click at the passenger side and nothing happens. But I just found that if I hold the key in the on position for several seconds the starter kicks in and the engine fires up.

I'm scratching my head on this one. I would be scratching it anyway though.

Solved! It was FUSE #14 - intruments. So it was a fuse as suggested and likely it will short out again. I appreciate your guys' help.

Thanks,
RC
