First time poster, short time lurker... Uh...

Anyway, I just got an '01 D2 as well. Motor with new HGs recently installed as well as the front cover dealio and I think a new water pump and all new hoses (heater core as well).

I've been using a phone app and getting 210F- 221F once it's warmed up. 221 for very short periods of time, but generally hovered at 212-215, but today seems to be sticking at 217. Ironically it would drop at idle. I got scared and started doing the hardcore research as this seems way too high- especially as it is in the 20s (F) here right now.

I ended up following a quick check provided to me of pulling the upper shroud and feeling the radiator for cold spots. Sure enough cold in more than half of it, and hot in another part. Radiator is clogged. I'm just going to replace and when I do go ahead and put in a 180F T stat. I'm hoping this will sort me out and at least allow me to drive the truck again. I may look to flush the system too.

Wise man. Your head gaskets will thank you.

I bought online the gray plastic 180 degree thermostat for my 2001 Disco.
To me it looks like someone just drilled a small 1/8" hole in the lip of the metal thermostat. Is this the way it's supposed to be or am I missing something?
I sent an email to the company I bought it from and I am waiting on their reply.

dont you have the other to compare? It will be difficult to drill there since theres a spring underneath. Ill have to check my spare later

The stock thermostat is still on the truck in use.
The spring is in the middle as usual but the hole is on the outer ring of the thermostat inside the plastic housing.
I forgot to mention since I'm home now to look closely at it... this thermostat also has a small gold-ish looking piece of metal attached and rattling inside the drilled hole in the lip.

that is supposed to be there. it allows a small amount of coolant to always trickle through and allows small amounts of trapped air in the system through.
