Default 03 D2 Harmonic Balancer & Crank Seal & Overdrive

Hello Land Rover world, 2 days ago I am a first time owner of a Land Rover Discovery 2 2003 SE 128k. However!!!, I drove it home (3 hour drive) and pulled it into the driveway to go to the bathroom and come back out a oil smoking and spewing D2.
I looked under the hood and there was oil everywhere. So the next morning I took it to a shop and they said the Harmonic Balancer was bent and the crank shaft seal needed to be replaced. Also, the rear windshield had a oily film on it, which i assume some of the oil was leaking through. Now, I just bought this car, and I am working with the seller to help with the costs of the repairs, and I also don't want to pay a arm and a leg for repairs on a '03. The mechanic quoted me $680 for harmonic balancer and $120 for seal and also $100 for misc stuff like cleaning and oil change.

Lastly, while driving home I notice the overdrive would not kick in. It was like it would not even attempt to at any speed range.

So all in all, what would you guys suggest me do for getting the D2 up and going at a good cost? secondly, do you think the Overdrive is somewhat connected to the crankshaft seal?

Thank you

Contact Abran (see the link below) and get a used balancer. It is a piece of cake to replace the seal. The hard part is getting the nut off the front and re-torquing it. The whole job can be done in 1-2 hours in your driveway. I am questioning the mechanic saying the balancer is bent? That does not make sense to me, anyone have any thoughts? I am wondering, with 128k, if the head gaskets failed and someone installed a used motor that had been dropped.

As said above a simple job you just ran across someone who did want to do it and was going to make it worth there while.

No overdrive on D2s.

Not normal. Checked this evening after responding, 50 mph was about 1800. Torque converter has a lockup clutch that may not be engaging or worn out. Clogged trans valves or just low fluid level could cause problems including never shifting into 4th. If other issues resolved you'll need to address this one. Search a bit here and web and should find additional info to understand.
