2000 Discovery 2 locked and won’t
When attempting to put my Rover into drive or reverse I’ve noticed that there’s a mild grinding noise then it gets loud when placed into reverse. It started out by driving it normally on the interstate then it just gave out and feels like it locked itself completely. It does move freely when placed in neutral but will not move forward when put into drive or move back when placed in reverse. Friends are telling me it’s my torque converter but none have experience with Disco IIs. The 3 amigos are displayed but no check engine light is on. Any advice on what it could be? Fluids have been changed and filled along with both drive shafts being replaced.

The hi-low lever in front of the transmission shift lever.
- Start your truck put it in neutral, firmly push the lever forward, you may have to pop into reverse then back to neutral to get it to move.
- That will put in low if it goes all the way forward. There is a neutral spot between hi and low, you may or may not get a bong noise
- Now put you truck in gear it should go in with no noises
- Ease off the brake - no gas there should be no odd noises
- Give it a bit of gas drive maybe 100 - 200 Meters
- Same drill into neutral and and firmly move the hi -low lever all the way to the rear.
- Back into gear - is the noise still there ?
- If so try putting the hi low lever into neutral - then your transmission into drive does the noise go away ?

3 years later and found out my transfer case shaft blew and lost teeth enabling it from moving and also locking it into place as if the differentials were locked but I had free spinning tires as soon as both drive shafts were removed. Also ruined my reverse light switch(AMR6666) locking it into place when I changed each gear on the shifter with no blinking lights. So the grinding noise was just a blown t-case which is now replaced. I got lucky it wasn’t the transmission.
