So your viscus clutch is bad and if your radiator is the original one, trust me, it is at least 1/2 restricted, which is very common for us.

caymandrew,

I 'm wanting install a 180 stat and a digital coolant temp gauge. What can you tell me about them? Where did you get yours? Was it easy to install? Where is the sensor at on the engine? What is the price$? Do you use dexcool still or green coolant?

Anything you care to share about your experience using it?

Thanks!

Just get an Ultra Gauge and plug it into your obd2 port.

Get 180F stat as an original Land Rover brand, not motorad. Rovers North is one of several vendors. Motorads have been reported opening at higher temps in some cases.

Ultra Gauge plugs into the OBDII port. There are other scanners, but UG is pretty hard to beat features and pricewise.

Use of dexcool will lead to cooling system failure from sludge build up unless every owner of the truck has maintained a 24 month flush and replace cycle, never had air leaks, and never used anything but distilled water to top off. Not likely if it has ever been to an Iffy Lube or similar shop. To confirm any radiator operation, check temp on fins top to bottom with IR thermometer, more than 10F coolr on the bottom and sludge has sunk there and is blocking the flow. Eventually you have half a radiator.

Follow the above mentioned. I bought my 180 t-stat from RoversNorth.com

The install is very easy. Took about 30 minutes, you'll lose three quarters of a gallon of antifreeze in the process. When finished, just pop the expansion tank out and hold it up as high as it will go, with the bleed screw loose, and tighten screw when a solid stream of coolant is coming out, to remove all air from the system. Put tank back in, fill to cold level. Done. No dexcool in this rover for many, many years.

I use the Ultra Gauge for all kinds of invaluable data. They are worth every penny.

FYI, I bled my system again the next morning when the engine was as cold as could be. Had some air bubbles! Now that's its fully bled, no more problems while at idle for long periods of time... duh! (Good thing I didn't replace my radiator and viscous fan Although due to age they are on the list!)
