IMHO if in the VIN range and beyond 50,000 miles just treat it like any other Disco.. slather on the devotion, park over pebbles, and a reserve fruit jar full of cash.

I have an 03 discovery. I kept listening for the ticking noise.......but never heard it.
I have had my LR for 3 yrs. I have gained a plethora of knowledge, insight, and information
On this site. Thanks to all you great posters. I have the Three Amigos and Reverse has gone out. I have put close to 20,000 miles on her. I was starting ti think she just might last,I have had the same fears as you wondering if they all go bad.

Yesterday I got in, drove a few blocks, stopped to get a cold drink, go on the road and in about 3 miles, no warning, no nothin', CLUNK, RATTLE, BANG. Oil pump blew, threw a rod through the oil pan. I am so sad.

I agree with many on here. Owning a LR is a love thing. She is high maintenance , but there just something about her that keeps you from parting. Believe me I have tried, but I can't imagine life without my LR.

Just make sure if you decide to buy one that you have the resources to care for her.

Yes I have a '03 with 125K miles on it and I use it as a daily driver and for trails as well and I love it. Would any motor last this long if it had not been replaced ot fixed.
For those of concern the death range is all 2003 Discoverys ending with 3A771801 – 3A808362
Mine falls in this but so what
This. Also just because it falls in the range doesn't mean it is doomed. I'm at 150,000 miles now. Had her since 108,000 miles. I figure the motor has either already been replaced or I never had the problem to begin with.

The "problem" with 2003s fell only on ones falling within serial number range mentioned, and most importantly, was limited to the problem with the oil pump. If that oil pump problem is correctly fixed, no more such "problem" exists with 2003s, and by the time the 2004 came around, the problem was already solved by the factory, so the ignorant trash talking of all 2003 and 2004 should be considered as just internet ignorance.
