Broken/stuck piston oil ring...
2001 D2, 4.0.
I've fixed every oil leak on the thing and was using 2qt/60 miles or so. Also was getting misfires on cyl7....plug fouling. Oil. No real smoking unless I really stomped it. Head gaskets done about 20k miles ago.
Anywho....cylinder 7 has a bad ring. Now...it still has great compression. Around 160psi, as do the other 7 cylinders. I'm thinking I can pop the head off, drop the pan, and slip #7 out, re-ring it, and slip it back in. I'd probably do all the rod bearings while it was apart too.
Thoughts?
Dropped a bore-scope into the cylinder for confirmation.

Side note, I've never seen a stuck ring cause low compression. I suppose it could happen.
2 qts every 60 miles is crazy! Your plan sounds good to me though. I can tell by your car list, and your strap-on er...snap-on tool you kinda know what your doing at least!

Also I work at an indie Euro shop specializing in German cars.....hence the Snap On goodies. Shop tools, lol.
Hopefully this week I can get this thing torn down for exploratory reasons. Planning for the worst. ....mostly because I wanna work on the SIII 109 I got a few months ago.
