Coolant overflow bubbling?
#11
Yes, I run the cap one turn loose to alleviate the pressure. It makes no difference in how hot the engine runs, it just raises the boiling point by raising the pressure in the system. Both are problematic.
The pressure can cause all of the non-metal component to crack and I believe also increases the probability of a blown HG. I have cracked/split radiator tanks, coolant bottles, hoses, and the lower plastic spider before I finally began running one turn loose.
The higher boiling point is also a problem because it enables the engine to run hotter when the cooling system is not up to snuff. Much like a pot of boiling water cannot exceed 210 degrees as long as there is water in it, a non-pressurized engine cannot exceed 230 degrees as long as there is coolant in it. Hotter is definitely worse with these engines, overheating not only causes blown head gaskets but also is the root cause for the cylinder slippage and walked cam bearings that are common after overheating experiences.
