cooling fan removal
A little-known, added bonus of swapping out for the chevy fan clutch is that - because it is just a little bit longer - I can now put crescent wrench on the nut to loosen the fan. Sharp hit with a hammer and it's off.
Hi, sorry if this is a stupid suggestion, but it has been known to happen. Are you trying to loosen the fan nut in the right direction? The D2 V8 has a Right Hand thread and should be loosened by turning anticlockwise the TD5 it is the other way round.
Use the holding tool on the Water pump pulley and then turn (knock) the fan nut anticlockwise.

Craftsman 47378 3pc Fan Clutch Wrench Pulley Holder Set | eBayJust found it on Ebay- $32.50 shipped!
OK gents thanks. As rave states fan is standard R/H thread........PB blaster on the nut 10 min soak. A rag folded and jammed in alternator pulled and a sharp wrap on the wrench. Took a 1 1/8 craftsman wrench and ground a bit off as I returned pullers. Thanks to all. Note my update on timing cover replacement there is 10 bolts securing cover, not 9 as rave states..........putting a bit too much force with 3ft pry bar to get cover to move...10th bolt is 9oclock position next to water pump outlet.....

Here's my el cheapo solution to the fan clutch wrench matter.
Get a $5, 3-foot piece of 1-inch steel bar from The Home Depot or Lowe's. Cut it to half length. Drill a 1/2 inch hole near one end, as pictured. That's your tool for holding the pully to keep it from turning. You position hole in the wrench you've just created over a pully bolt on the left side of the pully (as you are facing it) and lever the bar against the pully hub.
I then use a pair of 10" Vise Grips to grab the nut. I use a piece of appropriately sized pipe to extend the Vise Grips handle. But next time I'm near my local Northern Tools I'm planning to pick up this fan clutch wrench which should fit the nut on a DII.

Northern Tool sends out coupons regularly, including one for $5 off a purchase of $15 or more. That means I'll have an ideal wrench set for my truck that will work better than most of the generic sets for essentially $16 plus tax.
