My problem is that the device I want to use is an older iPod touch that can't run a newer iOS do I can't use the current apps.

I believe you can use the WIFI capable ones instead of Bluetooth, as most of the apps will recognize it that way.

Still doing research and will report back if I find anything different

I have not used app nor any products yet, just posting a starting place for info.

From one site thus far.
"iPhone/iPad has restriction on Bluetooth support (Basically iPhone/iPad/iPod requires BT data device to have a special Apple authentication chip which 99% of the BT adaptors don't have). In order to use standard Bluetooth devices in data mode you need to jailbreak your iPhone. You will also need a third party tool to manage the Bluetooth. "

Can I leave the Elm plugged in to my Discovery fultime?
I leave mine plugged in all the time, Unless I'm going to leave it sit for a couple of weeks or more.
Instead of having someone start it every few days I read to disconnect the negative post on the battery while gone. Not sure why the negative post?.
Anyway
But yea I leave my ELM plugged in all the time. I need to boot the phone occasionally so the bluetooth doesn't hang.
Price is down $12 bucks? wow I gave $35 for mine on Amazon but it was year before last. May be something better out there now.

Ok, so what am I doing wrong......just got my OBDII tool today and plugged it in and turned on Torque on my phone, but it won't read the ECU. My phone finds the Bluetooth connection to the scanner, but it won't link to the ECU. Checked with my wife car (plug and play) and it works fine.

Do I need to configure something different on the discovery?

Help.

Oh, new issue found tonight, I have a water coolant leak. Gonna have fun finding where that's coming from, I fear the radiator......

You could have an issue with the BCM to OBDII port header. I had an issue with corroded headers behind the blower motor. One of the headers fed the OBDII port.
