It sounds almost like your serpentine belt 'chirping' as I drive - and it's not the belt - or the engine.

When I give the car gas - it 'squeaks or chirps' and it stops when I stop giving it gas.

It doesn't make the sound when the car is moving and I put it in neutral, or when it is in neutral and I rev it up - its not the engine, its not the brakes, so I am assuming it is either the (ATX) tranny or gear box.

My next step was to check and change the fluids as I JUST changed the fluid in the front axle (just in case).

I do notice a small leak coming from the back by the tranny - which anyone can see it is a sign something is going on.

So the faster I go while giving it gas - the faster it chirps. Almost like some metal on metal rubbing - but I can't find the sound.

Thanks!

First, never assume anything when it comes to your Rover, bad mistake.
Try driving in low range, do you still get the same noise? Is you still have the noise, I would rule out the t/case and say it is the tranny and even heavier oil won't stop the noise or wear at this point. I would suggest you find either a shop that can rebuild it or buy a good used one cause although your friend says it will last, it won't.

I actually read that before this post came up...

It started while I was about 300 miles away in Cali and I thought it was my brakes squeaking or something.

I will try to drive it in a low gear to see if the noise goes away. I do hope it is just the U joint - but we shall see.

Thanks for the input!

Eak, I believe Mikes reply was to the OP of this thread. That's why I suggested starting a new thread, so replys don't get confusing.
