doing head gaskets...what else should i replace while all apart?
#21
The $450 is with new springs, retainers, seals, and machine work. That should be pretty close to $200 in parts and machine work, I would think, and they are going to want their $90 an hour. I'm not sure how many hours they would claim, but I'm sure they would say 2-3 at least.
I've had bad luck supplying my own parts. Shops like to tell you that they won't warranty the work unless their parts are used, because they don't know where they came from, if they are decent quality, etc. I know that's just a way for them to make a little extra on the parts, but it's worth the extra few dollars, since it's such a cheap part. I'm all for saving money, so if someone can tell me where to get a set of good rebuilt heads for $200, please do so.

While the injectors are out, have them cleaned and replace the orings. Would do the waterpump as others have suggested, it can be done later, but mine started throwing needle bearings under the hood at about 145K miles. destroyed the fan and lucky me it didn't puncture the radiator too. 99 D2.
