Engine Swap Questions
Not really sure about the axles and transfer cases. I guess if I go this route I am basically going to have to swap out everything but the body itself huh? I was hoping for a diesel swap that would simplify engine work without costing me 5 or 6 thousand to do and would increase my gas mileage considerably. I am not doing any heavy four wheeling just some light stuff for fun here and there so I don't really need to do this to GAIN torque or hp. I am just not in love with this LR gas engine. I have always been a diesel pick up guy and so I just thought if I could find an easy swap I would go for it. I have never done anything like this so consider me an engine swap virgin and give me both barrels as far as opinions and thoughts. As far as the weight goes I am planning on doing an Old Man Emu suspension upgrade with heavy duty front and medium duty back and 2" lift all around. That should take care of the weight as far as the front end sagging right? This idea of mine is really way above me but I wanted to look into it. Thanks for the help thus far guys.
discomedic - I wasn't trying to bust ya or anything, I am a huge diesel freak. Almost 30 years of driving the lot. I just want you to be prepared for what a big project your in for. I am extremely curious if the bell housing pattern changed for Land Rovers or if they still use the BOP (Buick Olds Pontiac) pattern. I haven't had enough time to do that research yet.
I wasn't offended. I appreciate any advice I get. Sorry if it came across that way. I did some more looking and I found that the engine and tranny swap probably wouldn't be to bad as you can get the cummins 4bt with a th400 (I think that is the right tranny) already mounted for a pretty reasonable price. I never considered that the transfer cases and axles wouldn't hold up. How would that work with a swap out of that also? The disco would no longer be an all time 4 wheel drive with a locking diff would it? Unless I configured it that way. I think you are right that by the time I start swapping out axles and diffs and reconfiguring the 4 wheel drive shift pattern this is gonna be outrageously expensive. I only forked over 2500 for the vehicle I don't want to go to overboard with the swap as I don't have the money to go that far. (Of course I would sink in unlimited money to make the ultimate rig if I could). Anyway thanks for the advice.
The reason I want to find out about the bolt pattern is the Olds 4.3L diesel. Not overly powerful, but the kind of economy that I can only dream of w/my 4L. And a Disco I trans so I didn't have to figure out the tranny controller. Might as well start looking for a DI that has a blown motor so I can figure this all out. Won't be the first conversion I have done, and won't be the last I am sure.
And my apologies to the purists on here if my thoughts have offended you.

. Depending on which one you go with expect 750 pounds give or take for just the motor. Here is a link to a great 4bt swap website,
