Flashing M and S lights '01 Discovery
you might not need a switch but rather just an adjustment of the switch,
2 screws hold it on, Set E brake, put the shifter in neutral ( a helper is a good thing here)then turn on the key to position II then see if the N lights up in the display once this is done then go through the gears and see if they also indicate the correct positions.
You might just a slight adjustment of the lever arm or the cable ,
the XYZ switch is on the left side of the transmission.
If this fails then a new switch is needed, from searching around you can find a switch for about 70.00 search for XYZ switch

just like the person above have your battery and charging system checked, your alt. must put out at least 13.5 volts.
if it does not you transmission computer sees it as a problem and put your transmission in SAFE MODE, in safe mode the indicator lights will flash and you will only have 3 gear, no 1,2 or 4 which would explain the no acceleration.
What kind of shop are you bringing it too? someone who specializes in LR? because most American cars are satisfied at 12.5 volt, which may be why they have not found the problem.
start with have the system checked and have the cables cleaned on both ends

Well, I would have thought that they would have checked the battery. They state that they have a history working on Landys. But I'm beginning to wonder. Thank you, I will go get my battery looked at. Now, I have a couple more questions. :-) My cruise won't set and the steering wheel doesn't go down far enough for me. I'm 5 ft.
If the shop doesn't know discovery 2s they won't know about low voltage and ms lights.
If they are going to charge you to check your system, I would just go buy a battery. Costco sells interstate and has an excellent return policy, so if you find its not your battery, you can return it.
So, I had a friend with a voltage meter check my battery and when it was running was 13.5 and off 12.5. What else could it be? XYZ switch still? Repair shop said if I'm able to start in N then it shouldn't be the switch. Transmission? Gosh, I hope not. Only had it a month and have already replaced the radiator. :-/
