Harbor freight sells a set of metric sockets for extracting stripped bolts, works very well. I would try that before drilling out the bolts.

That's the answer I was looking for. I was afraid of dropping the pan, not being able to get it out, and having a royal mess on my hands.

Thanks

Hammer a 3/8 6 point socket on them and break them off. Then use self tapping I-beam screws to screw it back up in a slightly different position. (been there 100 times.)

I just removed mine because my driveshaft was touching it and have had no problems that I would know of. But I am thinking about adding some spacers to it and putting it back.

Just be sure to jack the body and not the frame, i believe i tilted it to the passenger side so i could remove it without taking the pickup off, if you want to remove the pickup i would think it would come out easier

This may be my stupidest post yet... but I thought the body was mounted to the frame. I assume you mean jack the frame and not the axel.

Torched my bolt heads off to get the crossmember out. Can't believe Rover used such soft 8mm bolts to attach the crossmember to the frame - how stupid. They should have used at least grade 5, probably grade 8. I plan to grind down the slag, drill out the remains of the bolt threads and use 3/8" grade 8 bolts to reattach with nuts up top. Just another Disco hassle to add to the list.
