So no, I don't think it has much to do with radiating heat from the engine/manifolds to the aluminum pipe, but much more to do with how much air flow there is through the engine bay.

Also, I'm almost positive that the temp is measured at the MAF because if it was measured in the throttle body the radiating heat from the engine and throttle body would throw off the readings, though I have no real evidence to back that up.
I googled it and you are absolutely correct! It is in the MAF. Our MAF is actually a MAFIAT... and will never be called that. http://workshop-manuals.com/landrove...ment/page_385/

Yep, 6 inches should be perfect!

That's what she said.

Looks good, Joe! One thing, I'd be careful about your MAF wire. Looks like it's really close to the serpentine belt. I also see you got the nicer clamps, they look good.

The wire is close to the belt cover, but since I do not have the air pump or whatever kind of pump that goes there, it is a good 6" inches from the belt. I ordered the blue tubes off eBay and the clamps came with them 22.46 total price for hoses and clamps. I used a 4" aluminum intake tube off eBay also and it was 16.48. Got the air filter from Advance Auto and used coupon code for 30% off and had 10.00 in their perks. total price was 42.00. Thanks for the write-up, and the nice words.

Thats awesome, and hell of a price! I paid more than that for just the filter

Quite welcome, my friend. Glad I could help.

That's expensive! Jeez! I paid $68.

That AEM actually won't work. The inlet side of the MAF is actually a different diameter than the outlet side and the throttle body. What I did was I just walked in O'Reilly with my MAF and said I needed a K&N that would slip right on, so I'm not actually sure of the diameter.
Do you also say "actually" in every freaking sentence when you are speaking as well?! That's ridiculous!

Actually, I don't actually think I actually do that in person. I might actually be wrong, but I actually don't think so.

I am looking into introducing a feed from my A/C climate control ducts into the intake after the MAF but effectively cooling the intercooler more on hot summer days. I am experimenting on the D2 first before going for the other trucks. IF it works OK I'll post the results but it'll take a dyno run to verify any improvements per se. I'm not looking for additional power but improved hot running intake charge improvements. The duct will no doubt need a shut off flap for winter conditions.
