Well yes, but if the sensor were not reading the temperature correctly, it would act as though it were still stone cold????

it can go either way. my light comes on randomly because the sensor is shot.

for the OP. Get under the truck and see if you can click the tranny into 4th gear by turning the tab that is attached to the selector switch. you should be able to cycle thru all the gears with the truck off and chocked of course.

Scout_Beagle -

On page 113 of the circuit manual for the D2 it shows two switch devices that can turn on the oil temp light. But it appaears that is all they do. I think one is tranny and one is transfer case.

The indicator on the dash says its in D as does the shifter, the check engine light was on but went out after I changed the coil pack; it has 94,000 miles on it. The other transmission related lights arent on just the three amigos (next project before snow) so I dont think its in limp home mode. The car is new to me so I am not sure what service it had in the past. I am guessing not much since the closest dealer or rover shop is about 450 miles away (a long way in third gear), since I live in the middle of Montana. I figure I will change the fluid as a start?? any suggestion on which type? Could it be the 3rd/4th gear shift control solenoid? Even though the MIL and Sport mode lights aren't on?

First of all, when the ECU senses it is warmed up, it will send a signal to the tranny computer that will then change the shift point.
As for the tranny being slow to go into 4th. gear, there was a TSB issued years ago for this problem.
Try a good fluid change, not a flush and add a good tranny additive like Lucas Stop leak, this will free rp the shifting mainly thru the govenor and shift solenoid.

Talking 4th gear

Next time you drive your vehicle and it is warmed up push the mode button. The "S" should show up on dash. I had an issue with mine where it was doing what your vehicle is doing but it was not shifting into overdrive on highway "M" showed up when mode button was pushed in high range. Long story short my high/low wire harness that lets the transfer case talk to the transmission ECU was chaffed on front drive shaft and shorting out. ECU thought it was in Low range and adjusted the shift points accordingly. Repaired and good as new. Not to say this is your problem but you can rule it out. Also slide under your rig and take a good look at all your wires. Good place to start is where your front drive shaft meets your transfer case.

Good luck.

i was gunna say, if you were back doing the coil, check the main harness that runs along right above that... i had a gaggle**** of electrical problems from just a few rubbing wires in the harness that affected everything from maf, o2's to air pumps... not sure where the tranny wiring and senors run but i think they come up along with the o2 wires on the rear of either side at the t connectors? idk just a thought.
