Default Nanocom Brake fluid and caliper swap

Alright fellas?

I’m changing front two calipers and changing brake fluid this weekend. I’m on a tight timescale so cant be messing it up.

I’ve never changed calipers before. Ive always managed to avoid busting into the fluid system. I’d appreciate some tips.

Ive got a nanocom which is going to help. And the missus if she is needed.

I want to make sure I’ve got everything I need before I crack into the system. The other car is off the road so I’d be stuffed if I don’t have what I need half way through.

I’ve got front caliper discs and pads coming from L8, and 3 quarts of fluid on the way.

What else should I get, from clear tubing to little bleed bottles etc, or whatever.

I want to properly swap the fluid as I’ve never done it in the years I had the truck. It’s overdue.

Anyone fancy a swipe at writing some basic 1,2,3 steps?

Thanks all.

Great thread.

Doesnt resolve the question of bleed order though. Furthest first or nearest first?

I ordered a one man band bleed tube. I’ll see how good that is.

I’m going to ptfe the bleed screw threads on the rears, the new fronts should be fine, although will check.

For the bleed order I start with RR, LR, RF & LF. Flush out the old fluid until it's clear.

Ok, thanks. That’s everything i understand as well. Start furthest away.. IIRC the rave states the opposite. It might be a simple error, i guess. or i might have dreamt it.

I think i have everything lined up and ready.

Stand by for frantic posts on Saturday and sunday when i cant get a firm pedal, and i have a flight to catch in xx hours.....

So far so good.

Nanocom is rigged up and pushing fluid around.

Quick question about swapping calipers.

When I introduce a new caliper do I have to ‘pre fill’ it with fluid. Or will the bleed procedure fully take care of that.

I know they are handed. Im obviously matching the one that comes off with the new one.

There is is no risk of an air lock in there is there?

I’m looking into buying a Nanocom so I can program the BCU, but man you can’t beat a jumper wire (say 10-15ft long) with a switch then plugged into where the ABS relay sits. Bleeding a D2 is a breeze. I now carry that in my trail box.

I originally got mine for programming a key, but I’ve done so much stuff with it.

I know what you mean about the jumper wire and button. Wouldn’t make sense to buy one just for bleeding when that system (or a helper) works.

Hi Cappedup, if you have the rubber hoses put a plastic scissor type hose clamp on them and do one at a time. You should only need to power bleed the whole system if you completely empty the brake fluid reservoir or disconnect the WABCO modulator. If you intend to replace all of the brake fluid you will defo need to power bleed the system.

TIP: when you replace the brake fluid fully power bleed the system at each caliper and then conventionally bleed the separate brake circuits starting furthest from the master cylinder, i.e. RR, RL, FR, FL on a LHD D2. You will need two persons to conventionally bleed the system properly, even the wife or girlfriend will do

If you have any resident brake DT codes don't forget to clear them.

Done and done. It was really easy I found. Had the missus on the pedal.

Good to get new calipers on there finally.

Thanks.
