The other day, while putting my 2001 Discovery II in park, the gear selector stick broke off in my hand! 2 parts are broken: the metal that makes up the gear stick, and the inner plastic piece which connects to the button on the gear ****.

Does anyone have experience with this issue? I am planning on welding the metal back together and trying to glue the plastic piece back on. Will this work, or would it be a better idea to try to obtain a new assembly for the gear selection?

If anyone could give me tips on the welding job as well as reconnecting the plastic piece, I would greatly appreciate it. Alternatively, if this wouldn't work, I would appreciate some links to where I can purchase this assembly new or used.

 

Are you saying that the shifter actually broke? Could you post a picture of the broken parts you are describing? That may seriously help the people on here to give you better advise on what to do or buy.

 

You are an animal my friend. I have never heard of a gear selector shaft from a Land Rover snap. As you already know they are made out of steel and not plastic.

I believe it came off because the gear stick had been refusing to go into gear. I lent the car to someone who proceeded to force the stick in place several times before I fixed it, which may have weakened the metal. I have a tendency to be kind of forceful without realizing it, but this was strange - breaking through metal! I've heard that this was a common problem in the older land rovers. African guides driving them would have to carry several gear ***** with them in case one broke.

Flabbergasted...I can understand the **** breaking...but HOLLY CRAP!

 

WOWWWWW!!! Is it getting stuck in park? Then needs to be forced into gear? That could be a bad brakelight switch. When you start it up and then step on the brake you should be able to hear something down near the shifter making a sort of clicking sound. (in my '03 I think I can feel it in the shifter too). That's the little pin moving out of the way allowing the gear selector to move. If you don't hear that or only hear it SOMETIMES when stepping on the brake, It may be bad.
I think you could also check if the brake lights work. I think if they don't, the gear-shifter lock may not work either. Good Luck man!!
