New Discovery Series II Enthusiast In Houston
Looks like I will need to replace my ignition switch. I bet I won't like the dealer price on that item. Any recommendations?
Dan
I can get an ignition switch without a key from a salvage yard for $100. How does that sound? I assume I can get a locksmith to re-key it, correct?
Wow!!! I had no idea. I guess I know where I will be going on Sunday. My key doesn't want to turn all the time and spending 10 minutes jiggling it isn't my idea of fun.
Today I heard a sound that sounded like a chain dragging on the ground. I hope it is not drive shaft related. I really want to drive the truck, but I need to sort out what to do about the drive shaft first.
Would advise you service both diffs and transfer case. If what drains out has metal in it, looks like silver stream, that is a bad sign. Don't drive until you at least check the levels, and don't drain until you can open the fill ports (1/2 inch square drive). While under there you can lube the various joints on the shafts.
If you have a bad shaft, it can be removed, and the CDL locked. This will put power to the other shaft and you can drive 2WD until repairs are made.

It will be Sunday before I can address the fluids so the truck will probably have to sit parked till then. I will check the levels and probably take it to my mechanic friend to have the services done. He has a lift in a shop/garage behind his house and that will give us a chance to check it out real good.
I did get a solution , two actually, to my ignition switch issues. I found a used part on eBay with two metal keys for $115 delivered and ordered it this morning and then one of my MB friends found me one with the factory key, with buttons, for $100. Now I can put the one in with the factory key and have one as a spare. I wasn't able to find one for $20. at least now I can fix this issue and scratch it off the list. Hopefully, the change out is a DIY thing and I don't have to worry about setting off the airbag. I'll search the forum first though before I tackle this project.
I had the u joints and drive shaft checked this afternoon by a trusted shop near home, although not a Land Rover specialist. They said everything seems fine, but they did feel the stutter at 35mph. It seems to go away when the truck is put in neutral. They referred me to a transmission shop. They will need to have it for an hour to an hour and a half and I can't do that till Thursday. I'll check all the fluids on Sunday and probably have everything serviced.
Spent 15 minutes looking for the transmission dip stick. Checked the manual. No luck. Searched the forum. No luck. Tried Google and found out that my truck doesn't have one. Seems it is a requirement to be able to crawl under the vehicle to check the fluid level. I'm wondering how many people have ruined a transmission because they couldn't do this.
