Quick and Dirty HG job
So a daughter threw a serpentine belt and I was in there looking around with a mirror and saw the back of No. 7 was blown. She is in college and only drives during the summer so I just want to bang this one out without getting too excited.
I want to get parts ordered this morning. Was going to get the Victor Reinz gasket set, a set of TTY bolts, and a set of exhaust manifold bolts. This motor has never overheated and is at 110k miles so I am hoping no deck job will be needed on the heads.
What am I missing? I haven't used the VR set before so am hoping it is complete.

Get the Eurospare kit, comes with Elring gaskets. None of the kits come with the 2 coolant pipe o rings or the upper intake manifold gasket, buy those separately.
Deck the heads. Why risk it? I have rebuilt sets for $450 if time is an issue.

Check the heads with a straight edge and a feeler gauge. If the gasket is leaking I'm betting they need decked. Factory spec is no more than .002". In all honestly, you'd probably be fine at .0025" or maybe even .003", but you're on thin ice there. I'd do it on my own truck, but I wouldn't do it on anyone else's.
Don't forget to check and set the lifter preload, especially if decking the heads. May need a shim kit available from Turner. It's a pretty crucial process that I don't see mentioned very often on these forums
Deck the heads or don't bother. Most machine shops can knock it out same day ~~ $80 around here. You don't want the hassle of doing the head gasket job only for it to still leak due to slight warpage in a head.
Rock Auto is selling head gaskets for $9 right now!
I didn't need any new exhaust manifold bolts. No problem reusing the old ones.
For that matter, if I had been careful I could have reused the valley pan gasket and the lower intake manifold gasket. Just a thought.
If you do the head gasket job with the motor in the Disco, you are going to need a 90 degree swivel/bend for your socket/torque wrench and some different sized extensions.
You can test all of your fuel injectors while they are still in the fuel rail, with the fuel rail removed. Maybe just 1 needs rebuilding (easy to replace the basket if clogged).
Just use a 9 volt battery with 2 wires to each injector (1 at a time, of course) while spraying carb cleaner into the fuel rail's fuel input port.
You'll see good spray patterns or leakage and hear each injector click on/off. Easy test.
Same for the valves. With the heads off you can spray carb cleaner into the air intake ports and then later into the exhaust ports to see if any of your valves leak carb cleaner. Lap them, if so!
If you have the budget, I highly recommend using the ARP studs+nuts and Cometic head gaskets, but they are pricey!
