S and M lights!
Get an elm327 bluetooth code reader off of Amazon and either the Torque app on Android or Car Wizard on Apple to clear the codes. New battery or clean the connections. You will be good to go.

I paid cash for a new transmission in 2004 (shop said I needed one). I later found out (when the same symptoms returned on the drive home with the new transmission) that it was the battery. As others noted, poor grounding can also cause the problem.
The other time I had them, the cable connection just behind the gear selection mechanism on the driver side of the transmission was not connected (my fault, after replacing the wiring harness).
There are other possible causes but those are easy to check.

There are something like 14 different faults that can trigger the flashing M & S lights and limp home mode. To diagnose it correctly you'd need a code reader that can read transmission codes. Most lower-priced scanners read and clear engine management codes only.
That said, the most common cause of the flashing M&S and limp mode is low voltage, which is why others are telling you to clean the battery connections and the grounds.

This morning I got the P0705 trouble code when I was driving up levels in a parking garage. My S&M lights were flashing and somehow I lost gears. Even though I was in "Drive", I pressed the gas pedal my Disco started rolling backwards like it was in Neutral.
I rolled backwards to safe spot in the garage, cleared the P0705 code with my Nanocom and drove off like nothing happened.
My battery connections are good and I never had that happen before. Weird...

Mine was showing S and M, as well as stuck in limp mode. I tried all the forum fixes, new battery, xyz thing, was even eyeballing a new transmission control unit thing. Turns out the dang electrical connector on the side of the tranny was broken and not making a good connection. Took it off, cleaned it up with some contact cleaner, epoxied the broken spots, and plugged it back in. Everything worked great at that point, made me feel like a real idiot. As a communications and tech guy, "is it plugged in?" didn't even pop in my brain until I already threw a bunch of cash at it.

Any update?
