Steering gearbox leak
I located a 34mm 6pt socket today and was finally ready to change my sector shaft seal on the bottom of the steering box. It has started leaking more this week. I was able to get the nut off of the shaft, but could not get the Pitman Arm off even with the proper puller. I was using a socket and my braker bar and the arm still would not pull off. I guess 12 years under the Rover...
She is put back together and resting in the garage until I can figure out how to get the arm off or decide to take her in and pay someone to do it for me. That hurts.....

WELL..........I used the lucas stop leak ( 2 bottles !!) and it pretty much stopped the puddles under my '98 w/ 150,000 mi..and then.......... winter hit...the ole pump groaned and groaned untill I drained out the stop leak and went back to the atf. found a seal kit or two on line but heard that it wouldnt last long. finally got mine remanned from REM STEERING in CA, (they"re on the net ).....it cost me $39.00 to put the ole leaker in a 5 gallon pail and ship it to them. They rebuilt it, shiny coating and all and sent it back to me for $260.00 shipping included !! no more leaks.
OK guys I thought I would add to this post as I just replaced the steering box and the lower Ujoint in mine this last week, I had found the seal kit for around $90 I think but decided I better go with a new box cause if the seal kit didn't work or was too much trouble to put in I would be out the $90 and then still need to drop $430 for the new box, so I ordered the Ujoint from roverland for $75 (plus $50 for overnight shipping) and then found a remanufactured gearbox locally for $430 about about 2 hours to remove and another 2 hours to put it back in and adjust it all. Pitman arm was the biggest challenge, used a ball joint seperator to remove the steering link from the bottom then took it in to a shop I used to do electronics work for and they popped the arm off the box for me for free (then put it on the new box)
as for removing the pitman arm from the gear box, it is just really tight a pitman arm puller and a high powered impact driver for a few minutes (mine was so tight the pitman arm puller actually started to bend at the hooks a little!) but she is back on the road and working great! still need to make a few adjustments but with the exhaust as close to these components as it is, I have to wait for a day that I don't have to drive the truck to do it.

I found a full power steering seal kit ( contains all seals, retaining rings and even the bleed screw) on ebay for just shy of $25 bucks. The seller is: pdt010 Question I have is my gear box is leaking at the input seal. The seal where the steering linkage meets the box. Is that what you all are refering to as the sector shaft seal? I sure hope not.
anyone have a hose diagram for steering box setup for a 1997 discovery. a friend removed the high pressure hose to have it remanufactured and I dont know where the other end attaches...........Thanks
