Using full syn change it every 5,000 miles, dino oil every 3,000.
Oil changes are cheap insurance.
Yes the engine may leak after you first put in full syn, but it will stop after awhile.
The engine seals will "weep" the old oil and once they are nice and full of the new oil they will stop leaking.
Pick a oil and filter brand that you can get easily and anywhere.
Amsoil and Royal Purple are both great oils but do you want to be ordering your oil on line everytime you need to change your oil?

10w-40 is a good weight for our engines and a good all around weight for most people.

I don't mean to hijack the thread but i just changed my oil for the first time using the synthetic and it is noticeably leaking....How long does this usually last? I was about to have my engine seals replaced (no cheap).

Did you by by any chance happen to use a Napa Gold/Wix filter some people over at another forum have been complaining about leaks too? A couple things to check. The first would be check your old filter (if it is still in the trash) and make sure the o'ring is still on it. Some times they get stuck on the engine cover and would need to be taken off. Second thing to do is get an oil filter wrench or strap wrench (or an old belt) and tighten it down half a turn, that should stop it.

if you're asking me, i haven't yet crawled under the truck to investigate.
based on the drips seems to be from the rear of the block somewhere. (not up by the filter...after the oil change, i check the filter many times because i wasn't convinced it was tight enough because i used my hand not a wrench)

Sbonomo- how much leaking? a few drops each night? or puddles?
I recently switched to syn, and sure enough the drips have begun (about 1000 miles after oil change). One or two drips each night.
I'm confident they'll go away, but have covered the garage floor in the meantime.
