Default Trans not engaging in reverse or drive.

03 disco with auto trans. It is not engaging when shifting from park to reverse or drive. This happens most of the time. Some times it works correctly. Some times it takes a few seconds then other times it will not engage at all.
Is it a temperamental XYZ switch? Or an adjustment in the shift linkage? Possibly in the t-case shift linkage (shift position switch?). Or something with the brake switch (I read something some where)?

It could be the XYZ switch. Saw you previous post that you having problem with 4th. XYZ switch, not properly installed will do all those problem you are having. Loosen and tighten the xyz and move it a fraction each time until you get those corrected. Its a bit tricky and sometimes you wont have any reverse if not properly marked or wont go up to the right lever setting.

I’ve also personally found the older tan XYZ switches to not be as picky when adjusting them vs the newer style black ones.

Best4x4, my experience was the other way around. The newer black ones was straight on when I installed and minor adjustment but the tan, gosh! I probably rounded the teeth inside twice, LOL! .
I think I used the black ones on the '03

Does it make a grinding noise when shifting back to park when it doesn't engage?

I have adjusted a couple times. I have all indicator lights when shifting through the gears. and all letters on the dash when shifting. I will play with it some more this weekend. It is the tan switch. and no noises when going into park.

My thought was the Transfer case. The Rover I bought would go through all the gears and all the lights would indicate, but nothing happened.

Crawl under there and open the trans filler up and check the level.
Probably been leaking out slowly.

All fluids are good. t-case works great. When I shift into gear I get no noise, no jerking, nothing. I definitely know when it shifts in.
