u-joint
There are 3 u-joints on the front shaft. With the right tools and somebody to help you if you've never done it before, then yes it is easy. If you have to ask, then it will probably be a huge PIA. The easiest thing to do is take it off yourself (make sure that you mark everything well so that it goes on exactly the same way you took it off and everthing lines up correctly) ,take it to a transmission shop and let them replace the joints. When you put it back on, torque is correctly and use some thread lock on the bolts. Or just drop the truck off at the transmission shop and let them take care of it.
Is replacing the u-joint for all discoverys or just the D2's? Just wondering cause I have a D1 and not sure if the u-joints were ever touched. If so, about how much would a tranny shop charge for this service? Thanks.
discoken - D1's have UJ's in their prop's too - 2 in the front and 2 in the rear. They need regular greasing, I do mine about every 6k service and also regrease them every time I use it off road.
Replacement parts for the bearings anc cups in the UK are about £8 delivered from http://www.paddockspares.com although postage will be a bit more for you guys in the USA if you buy them from over here.
Alternatively, instead of fiddling about replacing the UJ cups, bearings and spider you can buy a ready assembled new prop-shaft from the same place (the front one for my Defender and the tool to easily undo the prop bolts came to about £80 GBP delivered and came with new bolts at no charge) and replace the whole prop in about half an hour.
Cheers,
