What did you do with your DII today?
Will do. The basic plan is to cut a second dash that i bought, extending the heater controls downwards, creating a space for a double din unit. The trick will be to take my time with the cutting and make sure that I end up with a clean looking plastic facia once done. lots of sanding!
here's my inspiration for the project.
Here's the Dash with the cut made for the Double Din, heater controls moved down. A Double Din kit off of a Mazda fit into the Rover Dash pretty easily. It's all glued together, now it needs filled, sanded and painted.

Finished off painting the Dash and the NEX8000 was installed yesterday. For others doing this mod, the NEX8000 is really tight for room at the back of the Dash. I flashed the firmware to 1.08 to provide Carplay support.
A couple of learnings.
The installation manual and operating manual are very vague and plain misleading when it comes to the video mirroring feature. The only supported video out to the rear monitors is RCA (analogue). What this means is that all of those really cool integrations with iPhone and Android devices using HDMI are pretty much useless when it comes to using the NEX8000 to drive a full car video system.
I'm (hopefully) getting round this problem using a digital HDMI to RCA converter.

Either Pioneer needs to convert the rear monitor video to analogue internally or they need to add a HDMI out on their Headunit. Now I have to pull the Dash again, and switch the input into the NEX from HDMI to RCA.
Other than that, the sound is superb, in car siri is great and even the NEX inbuilt Nav works really well and comes with an offroad mode for me to play with.

Nicely done Robert. Makes me want to buy a center dash portion to send to you with a case of beer to mod it up for me. I'd love to put one of the double din Android radios in the dash.
It does look good, but to be honest, I think a flip up unit might be better in a Disco 2 because the height of the dash is so low. I noticed that tonight when I was moving my wife's LR4 into the garage, her dash nav is much much higher. I went with the in dash system because I want to install a bunch of gauges in a mudpod right where the rubber piece sits on top of the dash.
The downside to that is only one android radio is offered with the flip screen and it's pathetic and to be honest the flip screen looks like crap to me.

Agreed. I decided to try for as close to a "factory" look that I could for the very same reason that I didn't like the look of the flip up head units.
Give the pioneer nex series a try and see what you think. The dash kit from a Mazda
Tribune fits width wise in the OEM Dash, so it wasn't a crazy endevour of doing any custom fab with fibre glass.

I like the look of it but I'll be honest having the android os running the radio and the ability to use all the apps like google nav, pandora, jango, etc native on the unit is attractive. Plus the cost is around $225-250 for the android head unit.
The other nice thing is the phone integration with bluetooth and the torque app with a full obd2 suite built right in. It will do everything the ultra/scan gauge will do as well.
I have unlimited data and wifi hotspot on the phone so internet as I travel is generally not a issue. For when it is there is the radio and sd cards
You should do a write up on what you had to move and any pitfalls of the dash mod. I know I would be very interested in a bit more info. I already know where I can get the dash surround for cheap.
